Kung Fu for your BBQ…

Iced_Coffee

The first time I had coffee like this was in a little Vietnamese restaurant off the beaten path. Not knowing exactly what I had ordered, I was surprised when they brought me a glass with an odd looking tin contraption dripping really strong, bitter, chicory coffee into an unknown white substance which I later learned was sweetened condensed milk. I stared at this in awe as the coffee dripped right on top of the milk keeping its own layer. When the dripping subsided, the waitress came over knowing I was a little confused and mixed the coffee and milk together and poured it over a glass of ice. This creamy, caffeinated drink was pure joy! I don’t have one of these little coffee presses but you really don’t need one.

Ingredients:

While the coffee is still hot mix in the sweetened condensed milk and vanilla in a large pitcher and refrigerate. When the coffee has cooled down serve over ice.

I have seen the use of condensed milk in a lot of Thai drinks as well. Drinks like iced tea and the like. I had iced tea a lot when I was in Greece as well, because it is actually the only way I usually drink coffee. I love a nice Chai Frappucino!!!

We had coffee like this in Vietnam. I’m not usually a sweets person, but there was something about the combination of flavors, and maybe the unbelieveably hot temperature in Saigon, that created a taste memory that has stayed with me for years. Looking at your photo, the memory comes right back to me.

I absolutely adore Vietnamese and Thai iced coffee and iced tea! I am doing a menu for a cafe and I am trying to convince them that this would be a great addition to the regular coffee drinks available!
